Oil, Gas and Chemical

The energy sector is one that is vitally important to Alberta's International Region.  Going all the way back to February of 1947, the industry exploded onto the scene with the discovery of oil at the Leduc No.1 oil well.  This find revolutionized the country and, more specifically, the immediate region surrounding the well.

The Town of Devon sprung shortly thereafter to accomodate the huge influx of workers to manage and work the growing crop of oil wells and derricks in the region.  The discovery of oil in central Alberta led to further exploration in the province.  A wide variety of products and services are offered by companies in the region, ranging from reservoir engineering and super-heavy oil technologies to fertilizer manufacturing and environmental management of development sites.

Alberta has a developed a variety of methods for capturing and disposing carbon dioxide in sites, such as depleted oil wells. Alberta companies are also leaders in developing and using new international market mechanisms. One of these is emission trading to achieve greenhouse gas reductions." (Alberta-Canada.com)

Critical Labour Needs

Skilled labour is always in high-demand in this sector with the price of a barrel of oil approaching record highs.  Chemical-related companies are currently searching for dedicated pressline operators to learn the trade and move up in the company.
