Regional Advantage

Transportation

A national and international transportation hub, the International Region has a strong and growing sector that provides companies with the ability to move their goods by highway, railway, marine-way or airway. There are a variety of companies within the region in the transportation/logistics sector, including freight forwarders, couriers, trucking services and busing services.

Edmonton International Airport

The fasting growing major airport in Canada, the Edmonton International Airport is also the nation’s largest at over 7,000 acres.

Since 2006, passenger traffic has increased by 1.5 million people – with no current signs of slowing. Constantly expanding to meet the region’s growing needs, a $1 billion expansion project is currently underway to enable the airport to serve 9 million passengers annually.

The airport is also home to AirLINKS Business Park and the International Business Park, offering transportation and logistics services and state-of-the-art facilities.

Staged to become the new gateway for cargo transportation, Port Alberta, will combine air, rail and road transportation at a single point – the Edmonton International Airport.

Given the region’s rail and road infrastructure, and the airport’s proximity to Nisku and Leduc Business Parks, opportunity and location combine to provide cost-effective manufacturing, distribution and supply chain networks for both cargo and passenger traffic. Road

Alberta’s International Region is serviced by the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, part of the Canamex corridor that runs north-to-south from Alaska to Mexico City, as well as the Yellowhead Highway that links the Port of Prince Rupert to Edmonton and joins the Trans-Canada highway in Manitoba – directly linking the region from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

Rail

Both the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian National operate intermodal rail facilities in the Nisku Business Park, connecting the region by rail to every major city in North America.

Canadian Pacific is current planning the construction of a new rail facility on the southern boundary of Edmonton as part of the $1 billion Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative. This initiative is designed to improve the movement of goods between rail and transport vehicles, providing an efficient link from Alberta to Asia-Pacific markets.
